It was a cold wintery day and I found myself in Moorabbin at lunchtime and was in desperate need for a burger. Much to my delight I was actually very close to “Cool Bean Kitchen”, which is a place that has been on my burger bucket list for what seems like a lifetime!! I rushed straight there and couldn’t wait to try this place out.

After looking at the menu and deciding not to go for “The Gorilla Burger Challenge”, the choice was simple – the “Clucky Cow”, which came with 180g of seasoned prime cut beef, southern fried chicken, crispy bacon, double cheddar, grilled onions, creamy tangy signature sauce and house made ketchup on a toasted milk bun. I just couldn’t resist having a burger with the chicken and beef combo or as someone I know calls it “cheef”. Whatever you call it, it’s one of my favourite things!

This burger looked great. It stood tall, with sauce and cheese oozing everywhere. It was a very slippery burger and I needed my kung-fu styled grip on this bad boy. The first bite and sauce exploded out of it and ran everywhere. It tasted awesome. The chicken and beef were both so tasty and combined with each other beautifully. Bacon was fresh and not over cooked. Cheese was delightful, and the tangy sauce had just the right amount of kick to it, without taking over the burger. Best of all, the bun was soft, tasty and lasted the entire trip. Whilst there was probably more sauce then I would normally prefer, the filthiness of the burger made for a great experience.

Chips on the side were good too – crunchy and lightly seasoned. I need another serve of dairy for the day, so I grabbed myself a chocolate thick shake, which was ok, but it was more like chocolate milk with a large scoop of ice cream in it!?

As soon as I left, I knew I had just experienced something special. It was a great burger, and it is definitely sitting up there as a true “contender” for best burger of all time! Make sure you get down there and find out for yourself – you won’t regret it!

It had been a month since my last burger adventure, so I was super keen to get out and try something new. A new sponsor was announced at the local football, and it was a burger joint, so naturally my ears pricked up and got my full attention. Therefore, I headed over to “Good Company : Burgers, Brew and BBQ” in Mooroolbark to find out more about this place.

It was a Saturday night, and despite being early, it was filling up very quickly, which was a good sign. The menu is filled with burgers and American BBQ dishes. I went for “The Kitchen Sink” burger, which came with premium beef patty, maple glazed bacon, free range egg, American Cheese, beetroot, lettuce, tomato, pineapple, house made pickled onions, tomato relish and mayonnaise. Obviously, I told the waitress to “hold the beetroot” – there’s no room for that stuff on my burgers!!

This was a tidy, good looking burger, and I couldn’t wait to get stuck into it. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. Cos lettuce would not be my preference (I’m an iceberg guy!), and it also made for a slippery experience, especially when the mayo was across it too. The bacon was crispy and gave good texture to the burger. As usual, the egg almost stole the show, but this time it was the sweet, tasty pineapple that got my attention – it tasted sooooooooooo good! The bun was soft, tasty and on point too! Unfortunately, I thought the patty was too thin and got lost amongst the rest of the ingredients.

Chips on the side were slightly crispy and tasted great. No beer with this one, as I was driving, so I settled for some classic “tap juice” this time. I felt like a nice thick shake, but they were nowhere to be seen on the menu.

Overall, it was a good experience and the burger was pretty tasty. Next time, I would either throw in a second patty or add some fried chicken (probably the latter!) or I would give their burger challenge a go, which is a triple “kitchen sink” burger with fries. Either way, in the words of Arnie, “I’ll be back!”

In the old Captain America’s site in Ferntree Gully, Flame Trees Burger Bar has opened its doors. Could this be the local rival to On It Burgers?  I was lucky enough to get in there opening weekend to try it out. It was a Saturday night, and after being at the local footy, I was particularly hungry too, so went for one of their “big burger” menu items.

Order : Holy Grail

Ingredients : beef, pork belly, panko chicken, triple cheese, triple bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo and FT sauce

Meat : 7.9/10

Bun : 7.5/10

Sauces : 6.9/10

Ingredients : 8.2/10

X-Factor : 8.3/10

This was a big, slippery burger, and it tasted really good. The pork belly was interesting and gave the burger some needed texture. The beef and chicken were very good and combined well with the delightful cheese and bacon. There was a fraction too much sauce and mayo for my liking, but the flavour was spot on. Overall, a really good burger and definitely worth trying out for yourself! I will be back to try ‘dumb things” next time!
