After heading north to escape the cold for a short holiday recently, I found myself enjoying some the local burgers on offer and this time I headed out for dinner to “Mangrove” at the Seagulls Club in Tweed Heads, NSW that offers waterfront dining with local pub fare. Whilst not a traditional gourmet burger joint, I had to give one of their burgers a shot to see how it stacked up.

I ordered the “Beef & Bacon Burger” which came with pure Angus beef patty, bacon, American cheddar, tomato, lettuce, onion jam, smokey BBQ sauce and housemade aioli. You can also double the beef & bacon, for which I was completely “Natalie Imbruglia” about (ie Torn!) and ended up leaving it as a single this time. Yes, that’s right, I decided to take the smaller option and I think hell may have frozen over too! Lol

Waiting for my order, I was admiring the look of the burgers being delivered across the restaurant, and when mine arrived with the steak knife stabbed through the middle, it was just as impressive. I couldn’t wait to get stuck into it. The first thing that hit me was how good the Angus beef tasted. It was almost like having steak in it instead. The onion jam with the bacon worked well together and the fresh tomato and lettuce complimented it too. However, having said that, the beef and bacon were actually both over cooked, and having the onion jam on top meant the brioche bun ripped to pieces with each bite. Aside from all that, the most notable issue with this burger was that the cheese was not melted to the patty! As far as I’m concerned, that’s a major faux pas in the burger world. Surely, it can’t be that difficult?!

Chips on the side were just chips and not worth writing home about. Luckily, the James Squire’s 150 Lashes on tap hit the spot!!

Overall, this burger was actually quite tasty, and with a few tweaks could be even better, ie don’t over cook the meat, move the onion jam away from the bun and please, please, please melt the cheese! Otherwise, stick to the other pub styled favourites on the menu!

It was another cold, rainy day in Melbourne recently, so I decided to brighten my day by getting out to try another new burger place. This time I headed to “Bad Boys Burgers” in the city. This place has been on my burger bucket list for a while, so I was excited to be finally trying it out. A small place tucked away on Punch Lane off Lonsdale Street, there is plenty of outdoor seating, which I could see being very popular once the sun comes out!

The menu is simple and straight forward, with 5 burgers to choose from. I went for the “Bad Boy” which has wagyu beef patty, crispy bacon, cheese, cos lettuce, tomato and Bad Boy sauce. It was lunchtime and I decided I didn’t want to be too full during the afternoon, so I resisted the urge to add either a second patty, some fried chicken, pulled pork or a combination of all three!!

Served in a small basket with chips, and half wrapped in paper, this burger looked good. I picked it up and took a good look at it before biting into it. From the first bite, it was clear that this was a high quality burger. The meat was so nice and the taste of everything else was sensational. There was just the right amount of everything, and the bun was delightfully soft and tasty too. To sum it up, it was a “tidy little package” that was full of flavour and really hit the spot.

Chips on the side were awesome. In fact, they were some of the best fat chips I have ever had! I settled for the healthy option of a bottle of water this time, although if there were thick shakes on the menu I would have definitely grabbed one of them.

Overall, this was a great experience, and I will definitely be back. Next time, I think I will throw in some fried chicken and maybe a second patty while I’m at it too!! Aaaaaaaand maybe the pulled pork as well! Lol …… So just remember, Bad Boys make good burgers!

Father’s Day. Any chance of not having a burger? Ha! Of course not! I made my way to the Great Burger Caper’s current number 1 ranked burger joint – Burgled!! I headed to Knox this time to check out their new place, and I knew exactly what I wanted to eat too. I wanted to have a crack at their burger challenge. Why not I say?!

I ordered, the amusingly named, “Mass Murderer”, which is a triple “Bogan” burger – ie triple beef, triple cheese, triple bacon, triple egg, lettuce, tomato, onion, BBQ sauce, aioli and hold the Beetroot!! It also comes with a thick shake too, and I went chocolate. The goal is to finish the burger and shake in the quickest possible time and if you beat the record, it’s free! Sounds easy enough. So what’s the record I hear you ask??…… just a lazy, 2 minutes 37 seconds and that’s only at the Knox store. Apparently, the overall record is approx 1 minute, 30 seconds!! Yes. You read that right. 1 minute, 30 seconds!! Unbelievable!! Anyway, the waiter tried to insist that he stand there and time me while I ate, but that’s like timing me while I ran a 100 metre race to see if I could beat a record set by Usain Bolt!! I was more than happy to enjoy the experience and simply get through the meal, without trying to break any records or making myself sick.

This was a pretty big burger and picking it up was the first challenge. Once I got my grip and got started, I was away! The meat tasted so good and was perfectly complimented by all the other ingredients. Bacon was spot on and it had just the right amount of cheese and sauces too. The bun was on point, and withstood the pressure of the challenge, literally! However, I think the best part was the egg. I’m already a big fan of egg on a burger, and when there’s three of them, it’s even better. In fact, they were egg-squisite and I was egg-static about it too!! Lol

I also ordered some chips on the side (in case I was still hungry!), which were really tasty, and the chocolate milkshake was delightful too!! Pleasingly, I achieved my goal and finished everything. I felt a great sense of satisfaction for having got through the challenge and also for having enjoyed another amazing burger at Burgled.
