When you run a Google search on “Best burger Gold Coast”, the first link that pops up is to an article from the Gold Coast Bulletin that rates the top 10 burgers of 2016. The number one winner is a place called “Betty’s Burgers and Concrete Co” in Surfers Paradise, so of course it was no question as to whether or not I would make my way there and find out for myself. Located in the Chevron Renaissance Shopping Centre, this place is only a short stroll from the beach and surrounding shops. After being greeted at the door, you simply find a seat and place an order.

The menu is loaded with frozen custard ice-cream creations (that they call concrete!) and a simple, straight forward burger menu, that only has a few options to choose from. I ordered the “Betty’s Classic” that comes with Angus beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and Betty’s special sauce. Also, to make sure I covered a few more bases, I decided to add bacon and some southern fried chicken too!!

This burger was served half wrapped in paper, in it’s own cardboard tray and was literally exploding out of the bun!! I unwrapped it and realigned this burger tower, so I’d have a more balanced eating experience. I picked it up and from the first bite, it was delightful! The flavour of the beef and chicken was what hit me first. Both tasted amazing in their own right, and also worked so well together too – it was like a match made in heaven! Adding bacon proved to be a winning move (again) as it added even more flavour and texture that further complimented the other fresh ingredients too. There was plenty of sauce, and whilst that created a very messy burger, it tasted great, without being too over powering. The bun was soft, slightly toasted and buttered to perfection, making it one of the highlights.

French fries on the side were terrific and I was glad that I decided to try one of their chocolate thick shakes too. It tasted soooooo good and went hand in hand with the taste of the burger.

Overall, this was an awesome experience and I can’t wait for them to open in Melbourne.  They definitely seem to deserve their number one spot on the Gold Coast burger list! Therefore, I think you can safely add this “Betty” to the famous list that already includes Rubble, Boo, White and Cuthbert!!

When you spend the morning in the sun, on the beach and in the water, you work up a strong appetite. Luckily when you’re in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast, there are enough burger places around to satisfy your hunger. This time it was a visit to “Burger Lounge” in Kirra to help fill an empty stomach. I have been to this place before, and was looking forward to destroying another one of their burgers!!

Last time I had their “Nirvana” burger, so I was interested in having something different this time. I went for the “Wagyu & Truffle Burger”, which is listed as their “signature burger”, so figured it would be a good bet. This burger came with wagyu beef patty, Swiss cheese, truffle mustard, tomato relish, garlic aioli, rocket lettuce, tomato, pickled cucumber and caramelised onions. I also decided to add bacon and egg too!

This was a reasonably big burger and looked good on arrival. I knew adding egg was a winning move as the yolk was already gently running down the sides of the burger. Mmmmm…… I was egg-cited and couldn’t wait to get stuck into it! Meat was super tasty, and the cheese, bacon, tomato, pickle and onions were spot on too. The truffle mustard had a strong flavour to it, and was just the right amount so it didn’t take over the taste of the burger. The bun could have been a bit softer, and for me, if you swapped the rocket lettuce for butter or iceberg, then the performance rating of this burger starts to push up higher.

Chips on the side were really, really good, and washed down with locally brewed Balter XPA, made for a good experience. If you are in need of a hunger busting meal, then this place is worth visiting.

Still on holidays in Coolangatta recently, and it was pouring with rain, so in an attempt to shrug off the wintery Blues, I decided to get out and go for a burger somewhere. I made my way down to “Burger Edge” in Tweed Heads. I know there are plenty of these stores across the country, and given their website says their philosophy is “Honest food, personal service and value for money”, I was keen to find out what it was all about.

After reading through their extensive menu, I finally decided to go with “The Beef Stack” which came with double beef patty, double tasty cheese, pickled cucumber, grilled onion, tomato, lettuce, tomato sauce and American mustard. Then, to make it more like an Aussie burger with the lot, I added bacon and egg too. You also choose either a white or whole meal bun and for some of the burgers on the menu, you can have either a regular sized burger or smaller burgerette too.

First impressions of this burger were good, and I just needed it to cool down a fraction before starting my attack. When I picked it up it was heavy, and slid around a bit, so I needed to adjust my grip a few times before starting. Once I got into it and started to get a more even distribution of ingredients with each bite, it tasted good. The meat was full of flavour, and other ingredients were fresh and tasty too. The pickled cucumber was really strong in flavour and almost took over the entire burger. Adding bacon and egg turned out to be a smart move, as it just added another dimension of flavour. The only criticism was the bun. I’m not a big fan of a flour dusted bun to start with, but I also think it was too big for the burger. The juice from both patties and sauces were soaked into the bottom of the bun, which did not create the firmest base and caused it to rip more than it should have.

All that being said, it was a pretty tasty burger. Fat chips on the side were really, really good and being able to wash it all down with a Corona made for a good experience.

If this is the standard at each of their outlets, then I’d say it is definitely worthwhile trying out for yourself. Although, the risk of them suffering MSDE (Multiple Store Dilution Effect) is likely to be high, so be careful!!
