As you may be aware, I was recently at the “Hank Marvin Big Burger Biannual” event, enjoying the plethora of burger options available on a beautiful, sunny Melbourne day! Despite already throwing down a beef burger from Skipping Girl Take Away, I was still keen to try another option and make sure I got the most out of the day! I wasn’t sure what to have next and didn’t want to be too over indulgent, although I’m not sure that’s possible when it comes to burgers really?! Then it hit me! In fact, I literally walked straight into it – “Sliders on Tyres!”. There’s always room for a slider isn’t there??

I lined up and perused the short menu while I waited. There were 3 options to choose from – two beef and one pork. I didn’t think it was worth only ordering one, and 3 seemed like too much, so I balanced it out and went in the middle! The 2 options I chose were – 1. “Classic Beef Cheeseburger” with grilled beef, cheddar, onion, dill pickle and burger sauce (avoided the double beef option too!); 2. “Uncle Sam” with grilled beef, smoked cheddar, bacon, onion ring and burger sauce.

I waited what felt like a lifetime, but that was likely only due to excitement at the opportunity of tasting two more different styled burgers. Finally, my order was ready and I found a spot on the grass nearby. Both sliders were served in a small cardboard tray, and looked delightful! Now, the problem was which one to have first?! I decided to go the Cheeseburger. The meat and cheese tasted really good, and so did the sauce. Although there was way too much sauce, especially for such a little burger. The pickle was too much for me on this one. It was almost the same thickness as the patty and in a lot of ways took over the taste of the burger.

Onto option number two – “Uncle Sam”. The beef, cheese and sauce were good on this one too. Plus, the onion ring and bacon were amazing! The flavours and textures were spot on. I didn’t want this one to end and tried to wish for it to magically change into an unending burger, similar to that old commercial for Tim Tams where the packet continues to refill by itself.

Overall, across both sliders, I was very satisfied. A great way to try different combinations of burgers without filling up too much. If you see the “Sliders on Tyres” truck around, make sure you grab a few to enjoy because there’s always room for a slider!!

Long weekend? Check! Sun shining? Check! Over 15 burger vendors together in the one place? Check!! That was the status for the “Big Burger Biannual” event that took place at Hank Marvin’s Market at Alma Park in St Kilda East recently. It really was a burger lovers dream, so understandably, I was very excited, and the size of the crowd told me that there were plenty of other burger punters who were also relishing in this opportunity.

First decision was where to eat, and the only criteria I had was that it needed to be a place I hadn’t tried before. That didn’t narrow it down enough though as there were so many choices, so I opted for the one with the longest line, which to me, told the story and demonstrated the level of popularity I was looking for. The place was “Skipping Girl Take Away”, which is normally located in Abbotsford.

The limited pop up menu consisted of only 3 burgers – beef, chicken or “of wolf and man” which was both chicken and beef together. This time, I decided to go with just the “beef” option which came with wagyu beef patty, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and skipping girl sauce. My hunger grew as I waited, however despite the line being long, it moved pretty quickly, which was great because I was starving!

I was lucky enough to find a seat in the glorious sunshine, and excitedly unwrapped my burger like a kid with presents on Christmas morning. I got stuck into it almost immediately, and my first impressions were good. This was a simple, straight up burger. The meat was good and ingredients fresh. The bun was soft but way too buttery for my tastes. The best part was the Skipping Girl sauce – just the right amount of kick to make it interesting. Otherwise, the burger was kind of soft tasting and lacked texture. It could have definitely benefitted from some bacon, which would have broken up the softness.

Chips on the side were fat and tasty, which I enjoyed and despite wanting to try one of their milkshakes, given the hot weather I opted for a cold bottle of water instead!

Overall, the experience was ok. I would still like to try them in store one day, as there would be a more extensive menu plus I sense they would be even better on their home turf. I suggest you find out for yourself.

From the moment I left the exclusive launch function at Brooklyn Depot in Melbourne recently, I wanted to get back there for another one of their tasty burger treats. Lucky for me, it was only 2 weeks later that I found myself close by at lunchtime, so without hesitation, I headed straight there to satisfy my hunger. My previous Brooklyn Depot dining experience was in Surfers Paradise, where I found the experience to be a “contender” for the best burger of all, so naturally I was very excited.

Last time I was torn about whether or not to throw some of their fried chicken into the burger, and regretted that I didn’t, so this time I was keen to cross that bridge, so to speak. I was also in the mood for something different too and given I was also feeling particularly adventurous, I ended up ordering the burger of the month – the “El Toro”, a Spanish tapas burger with 5 hour slow cooked beef cheek, Patatas Bravas Hash, Padron Pepper Salsa, Oozy Cheese croquettes, Red Wine Reduction Sauce and Smoked Paprika Garlic Aioli. Plus I threw in some fried chicken, because I simply had to try it out!! This was definitely not a burger I would normally order, so I had mixed feelings about my decision.

It arrived, and it was a very big burger that looked amazing. After waiting for it to cool down, I picked it up and got into it. Due to the loose and sloppy nature of the ingredients, it was a very messy burger, especially early on as bits and pieces were falling out everywhere!! It took me a few bites to get into the rhythm and then I got hit with the taste explosion that this burger provided. The beef was soft and full of flavour. The cubes of potato hash, mixed with the cheesiness of the croquettes and the salsa were awesome! In fact, the salsa was delightful and had just the right amount of “kick” too. Adding the chicken was a winning move as it was really tasty and provided the burger with some solidness to the structure. The bun was great and held up for the entire journey too. Best of all, the combination of different flavours worked really well together.

Chips on the side were decidedly tasty, and yet again the shake proved to be a show stopper!! Last time it was the “Yo’ Mama” strawberry shake with Kit Kat shards, that made me weak at the knees. This time I went the “My Man” shake, which came with Hershey’s chocolate sauce, ice cream, milk, and crushed Oreos – SOOOOOO tasty and nothing short of life changing!

Overall, it was another amazing experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. As Molly would say, “do yourself a favour” and get into Brooklyn Depot as soon as possible!!
