Going away on holidays is always filled with new adventures, and obviously I always enjoy it when those adventures include a new burger place that isn’t usually on the radar. Therefore, when staying on the Surf Coast recently, and the opportunity to try a new burger place came up, I was fast to head straight for “Boss Burger Co” in Geelong West. I had seen and heard plenty of good things about this place, so was super keen to find out what it was like.

Unfortunately there were no seats left outside to sit and enjoy the beautiful sunshine, so I settled for a table inside. I knew I wanted to try something different and test this place out so decided to order “The Boss” with beef, lettuce, cheese, tomato, pickles, ketchup and boss sauce, then I added bacon, fried chicken and mac ‘n’ cheese too!

Served half wrapped in paper and upright in a small, individual tray, this beast was exploding up into the air as if it were reaching out to me, dying for me to enjoy the delightfulness it had to offer, and I was just as eager to get into it too. I picked it up, squeezed and squashed it around a bit so I could get a good grip and have half a chance at getting my mouth around it. A few bites in and I knew that this was an awesome burger. The beef was dark and at first glance appeared to be over cooked, but that was not the case. It was juicy and full of flavour. The fried chicken was also really tasty and as usual, worked perfectly with the beef. The cheese was great, the bun soft and the boss sauce was the perfect compliment to the overall burger – not too hot and just the right amount of kick. Adding mac ‘n’ cheese was another good move, as it made for an even cheesier affair, plus the crispy bacon provided great texture through the burger too.

Chips on the side were delightful, and the strawberry (thick) shake hit the spot too.

There is a sign on the wall in pink and blue neon that reads ‘Burgers & Dreams’, which reminded me of the famous movie, Cocktail and also summed up this experience. It was the stuff that burger dreams are made of and it had my tastebuds jumping for joy. In summary, there is no question that this is a “contender” for best burger, taking second spot on the ladder and highlighting the need for this place to be very high on your hit list!

When summer extends well beyond is expiry date, you get out in the sunshine and enjoy it while it’s there, which is exactly what I did recently. It was another glorious day, so I made my way down to Docklands and hit up a place called “Aussie Steak ‘n’ Burger Bar & Grill”. I have been wanting to try this place for a while, so was pleased to be finally be getting there.

Now, usually lunchtime on a Wednesday is not the busiest time of the week, however I would have expected at least one other punter to be there?! But no, I was the only one. After taking my pick of the tables, and perusing the menu, I decided to go with the “Black Angus Burger” – flame grilled ‘Black Angus’ beef pattie, baby cos lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, grilled bacon, gherkin, American mustard, brioche bun and BBQ sauce.

As soon as it arrived, the first thing I noticed was how over cooked the bun was!? It was char grilled, crispy and cooked to within an inch of its life. Perhaps the taste of the burger would make up for it? Unfortunately, it didn’t! The meat was over cooked and burnt, which made it dry and tasteless. The gherkin pieces weren’t even separated, making them super thick and only in one or two spots, rather than throughout the burger. And the pattie was too small for the bun, throwing the meat to bun ratio way out of whack! The mustard and bacon were probably the best parts, but I’d say that’s like having only one good player when the team loses by 100 points?!

Chips on the side were ok, and I ended up having a pint of Pure Blonde because they ran out of Carlton Draught!? That’s right. An Aussie Burger and steak place that ran out of Carlton Draught! Riiiiiight. Okay?!

Not much good to be said about this experience. Perhaps it was an off day? I know it wasn’t because they were busy!? And that really speaks for itself.

With an ever growing list of burger places to visit, sometimes you can find yourself spoilt for choice when deciding where to go next and for me, this is a great problem to have. A new place called “Nostimo & Co” opened recently in Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick and after seeing a few posts on social media about it, I added it to the list. Then, a friend of mine took the time to tell me how good the burgers were and that I needed to try them, so it immediately moved up the list and I made an effort to get there as soon as possible.

This is a fresh, bright looking place with enough tables and bench seats to eat in to enjoy your order or take away. They have a good menu with lots of choices, and I decided to order “The Sunnyside” burger with beef, double cheese, bacon, fried egg, lettuce, tomato, pineapple, onion, ketchup, secret sauce and “hold the beetroot!”. I also added some fried chicken for good measure too!

I waited patiently for my order, and felt excited about trying this burger. It finally arrived and first impressions were good because it looked awesome. I waited for it to cool down before getting stuck into it. This was a big burger, so I made sure I used my GI Joe, Kung-fu styled grip to make sure I didn’t lose too many ingredients along the way. Put simply, this burger tasted so good! The beef had a really good flavour, and the chicken was insane! Bacon, cheese and egg were all spot on, and the pineapple provided the right amount of sweetness too. The special sauce was really tasty and the soft bun held up until the end. The combination of flavours and texture was near perfect. As soon as I finished, I said “that was amazing!” and knew straight away that this was right up there with some of the best burgers going around.

Chips on the side were really good too, and just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I washed it all down with a “Milo and Tim Tam” shake. Whoa! SO good! In the end I had to take the lid off to drink it because bits keep getting stuck in the straw.

Overall, an amazing experience, so make sure this place is on your burger bucket list, and towards the top too!
