Feeling like a burger for lunch, yet knowing that I would be having beef for dinner, I decided to mix it up a bit and go for a chicken burger instead. I decided to visit a place in Malvern East called “Home to Roost”, where the menu is filled with grilled chicken burgers and lots of other chicken things too! Now, whilst I am a big fan of fried chicken in a beef burger, this is only the second time I have reviewed a straight up chicken burger. The last time was while on holidays in Port Douglas, so I was curious as to how this would stack up.

I ordered “The Royale” which came with grilled marinated free-range breast fillet, iceberg lettuce, bacon, cheese, tomato and mayo. It is a true takeaway styled place, with only one small table to sit at outside and luckily, it was a cold, windy day so I was able to grab a seat to enjoy my feast.

Finally it was ready, and as soon as I opened the box, I thought how good it looked. I picked it up straight away. This burger was wide, not high and the ingredients were well spread, ensuring a good flavour combination with each bite. The grilled chicken was amazing!! It was juicy, tender and cooked to perfection. The marinade was super tasty too, without being sickly or overpowering. Bacon was great, with the lettuce and tomato being fresh too. Plus the mayo provided just the right amount of flavour to compliment the whole burger. The bun was more like a flat focaccia style rather than a traditional bun, and you could argue that it was more like a gourmet sandwich, but it’s called a burger, so I’m sticking with it!!

Chips on the side were seasoned with chicken salt and had just the right amount of crispiness, making them a good compliment to the meal. And with limited drink choices, water was the order of the day!

Overall, this was a great experience and I highly recommend you find out for yourself. It was one of the best chicken burgers I’ve ever had, in fact I enjoyed it more than a lot of beef burgers. Best of all, I didn’t feel that heavy, full feeling all afternoon either, so likely to appeal to some of those (partially) health conscious people out there too! Next time, I will go for “the Boss”!!

Another week passes by and another burger gets destroyed! This time, I found myself at Chadstone Shopping Centre and decided to try out a joint called “Chur Burger”. This place is located within the Hoyts cinema area and from what the guy behind the counter told me, you can even have your burger delivered to you in the cinema! It must be part of the “Hoyts Lux” experience, and that’s “Gold Class” for those Village fans out there!

After a quick look at the menu, the choice was pretty simple – “the Chur Beast” with double beef, double cheese, double bacon, tomato jam, BBQ sauce and mustard mayo. I took a seat and patiently waited for my meal to arrive. As soon as it landed, I couldn’t help but notice the cascading, dripping cheese and sauce that spewed from this beast.

First bite and sauces ran everywhere. The beef was pretty tasty and the cheese was great too. Bacon needed to be cooked more as chewing through the rind became a burger tug of war of sorts as it was hard to chew through without bringing the whole piece with you. The tomato jam tasted really good, but there was WAY too much of it. It was reminiscent of the sauce you would expect with a chicken parmigiana! The burger was drowning in sauce and with the amount of cheese also being out of control, it made for a very messy affair. The sauce really took over the burger and without many other ingredients to compete with, it seriously lacked punch.

Chips on the side were ok and this time I enjoyed another cold Corona to wash it all down.

Overall, it was not a great experience. The sauce was just too much. Given the messy factor, I would hate to try and eat this in the cinema while watching a movie, so maybe a more basic burger would be a better option as the beef patty and cheese were reasonable. It might be worth a try if you’re seeing a movie but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get there.

Another cold and wintery day in Melbourne, and I was keen to beat the winter blues with a scrumptious burger. I was in the Glen Waverley area and decided to revisit Yo My Goodness. It was almost 2 years ago that I first tried this place, and to be honest, whilst it rated as a TKO, after all the hype, I was slightly underwhelmed with the burger at the time. I was so pleased to be giving this another go, and keen for the situation to be reversed.

Luckily it was almost mid-afternoon and wasn’t too busy as the lunch crowd had likely passed through already. Although, still a fair few there for the time of day. Anyway, I wanted to order straight from the menu and unaltered, and after reviewing the list, couldn’t go past “the Muffler” burger, which came with beef, southern fried chicken, double cheese, bacon, pickles, onion fries, BBQ sauce and mayo.

I waited with anticipation, and when it arrived it looked amazing. I picked it up and got stuck into it straight away. First bite was great. The combination of beef and chicken were awesome, with a nice hint of spice to the chicken that added a bit of “x-factor” too. This was also one of the few times that the fried chicken was not at boiling point and presenting a risk of third degree burns in your mouth – kudos YOMG and thank you!! Bacon, cheese and sauces were spot on and in perfect proportion to each other. The milk bun was terrific too and stood up to the pressure. The best part had to be the onion fries! They were a good flavour and provided the perfect crunchy texture.

Chips on the side were not too crispy, well seasoned and pretty good. Luckily, I also decided to go for the “Hokey Pokey” shake, with honeycomb, butterscotch, caramel fudge and crumble. This is not a flavour that I would ordinarily go for, but I’m so glad that I did because it was “da bomb!”. When you pick up a thick shake and realise how heavy it is, you know it’s got the goods! The best part was drinking the ice cream at the end, filled with crushed bits of honeycomb, nuts and caramel…… SO tasty!

Overall, this was a terrific experience and thankfully a far cry from the last visit.  As I was walking back to the car, I couldn’t help but keep thinking how good it tasted, which is a sure fire sign of a good burger. Therefore, I’m pleased to say that perhaps on my first visit, they just may not have been on the money as it seems there is much to like about the burgers at YOMG!! Suggest you get in there and find out for yourself and I will be back again soon for “the Reaper”!!
