It was the weekend before Halloween and Spooktober was on in St Kilda, so being in need of a good scare, I got along to find out what it was all about. On my way there, I walked right past Ziggys Eatery in Balaclava and knew straight away where I was going for a late dinner. Getting my scare on certainly built up my appetite, and afterwards I headed straight to Ziggys for my well earned burger fix!

Last time I was at Ziggys was more than 2 and a half years ago, and I remembered having the “Recovery Burger”, which at that time became the new leader on my search for the greatest burger of all time. Understandably, I was super excited to finally ‘get my zig on’ once again. This time I ordered the “Texan Giant”, which came with 250g Beef Burger, Cheese, Tomato, Pickles, Grilled Onion, Lettuce, Aioli and Ziggys sauce. I really wanted to try out their fried chicken and given it had been a ‘long time between burgers’ so to speak, I decided to throw in a piece of their southern fried chicken. I also added some bacon too, simply because bacon just makes everything better!!

It arrived, and “Giant” was right – this was a big burger. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I picked it up, manoeuvred my ingredients a little bit to make sure it was as even as possible, and I got stuck into it. The slightly spicy flavour of the chicken and special sauce was really good and it hit me straight away. The combined taste of the chicken, beef, cheese and bacon were awesome. Bun was soft, tasty and pretty good. There were a few too many pickles for my liking, but that wasn’t a major issue. The only questionable thing was the shape of the piece of chicken as it was long and thin, which made it difficult to have an even distribution of ingredients with each bite. Again, no big issue!

Overall, this was another amazing burger from Ziggys and it validated their previous high score and top of the ladder standing. I would definitely recommend you go there to “get your zig on” and find out for yourself.

Given there are so many great burger places around, I find that I do not usually review the burgers from the many small, take away shops that I have frequented over the years. However, when I find myself returning to the same place for another burger, I know that it is worthy of reviewing and giving everyone the opportunity to also enjoy the delightfully tasting treat. The place is called “Fresh & Fried on Rainbow” in Coolangatta, right near Rainbow Bay and I found myself there after a few hours in the sun on the beach.

I ordered the “Granna’s Burger” which is a burger with the lot – beef, tomato, lettuce, onion, cheese, pineapple and “hold the beetroot”, then it has double bacon, double cheese, double egg and a hash brown, with your choice of sauce and I went with BBQ. This is a typical, flat, sloppy looking, fish n chip styled burger that probably doesn’t look overly inviting. However, as they say, do not judge a burger by it’s appearance. From the first bite, I was blown away with the tastiness of this burger. The combination of the patty, cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce is delightful. The hash brown is surprisingly good, without being too heavy. The best part was the double egg – so good!

This was a really awesome burger, and as I said, it got me back there for another one. So if you are in the area and have the munchies, I highly recommend you check this place out and throw down a “Granna’s Burger” of your own – definitely worth it!

Another warm, sunny day on the Gold Coast and another burger adventure. This time it was back towards the Gold Coast Airport, where I had spotted a place on arrival called “Burger Me Fresh”. Nestled in amongst the shops and next to a service station, this café styled burger joint is bright and airy, with large bay windows open down one side where you can sit at a long bench and watch the world pass you by.

I went straight for the first burger on the menu – the “Gold Coast burger” with the lot, which came with beef, iceberg, tomato, balsamic caramelised onion, bacon, egg, pineapple, cheese, ‘burger me’ relish, tangy aioli sauce and “hold the beetroot” of course! This was a big burger and looked pretty good. I could barely get my mouth around it and it was super slippery, so I had to make sure I had a strong grip that squashed it down too. Despite the tight grip, I still almost lost everything out the back with my first bite. I had to reposition a few things and line it up again before going ahead, and once I got my rhythm it was fine. The beef was ok and the lettuce and tomato was very crisp and fresh. The downside was that there was too much caramelised onion, and together with the balsamic flavour, it completely took over the taste of the burger. I like onion but I don’t need my burger swimming in it, or should I say ‘drowning in it’. Plus the bun was atrocious – dry, tasteless and tore to pieces with every bite!

Chips on the side were ok and a very generous serving, which was good. The strawberry thick shake was actually really good and was probably the highlight of the meal.

Overall, a disappointing experience, so unless you find yourself at the airport looking to kill some time, I wouldn’t go out of my way to try this place out.
