11 days without a burger is just too long, and I was determined to not let it become 12 days too!! I cleared the schedule and went out for lunch to another burger place that was on my hit list. This time I headed out to Croydon and went to “Top Bun Burgers & Fries”. I had not heard much about this place and it is tucked away in the corner of a small retail shopping strip next to a supermarket.
Inside this “Top Gun” inspired, themed place was a basic, no nonsense looking burger joint. I perused the menu, and I was surprised (disappointed) to not see burgers named Maverick, Iceman or Goose?! Instead it was “Top Bun Classic”, “Cheeseburger” and “Top Burger” – I don’t remember any of those call signs in the movie?! Lol. Anyway, I was extra hungry and decided to go with the “Double Up” burger – two 100% Angus beef patties, double melted American cheese, top sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion. I also added bacon and egg too!
When the burger arrived, it looked good. The cheese melt look great and I couldn’t wait to get stuck into it. Straight away, I realised how good this burger tasted. It was a slippery, messy eat. However, the meat was full of flavour, the cheese was amazing, and other ingredients were fresh and tasty too. The “top sauce” was heavy in a few parts, but pretty good and the addition of bacon and egg was a good move. Luckily, given the name, the bun really was “tops” – soft, tasty and strong enough to hold up through every bite.
Chips on the side were pretty good. They were not cut too thick, lightly seasoned, and soft but with just the right amount of crunch. If I was to rate them out of five, I’d say they were three and a half stars! I was impressed with the chocolate shake, and not just because it was thick and tasty, but because it was served in an old school, traditional, metal cup. I feel the vessel made it taste even better!!
Overall, this was a terrific experience and one that I would definitely recommend. So take the “highway to the danger zone” and fly in to destroy a few bogies of your own! Sorry, I mean burgers!
