On a glorious, sunny Melbourne day, I found myself travelling south out of the city right on lunch time and of course my stomach was tuned in for a burger. I knew there was a place in Glenhuntly road that I had not tried, but could not remember the name, so I drove along eagerly looking for it and was very pleased when I saw the “Boxers Burgers” sign.
This boxing themed burger restaturant is very cool. Given the rating system I use to score burgers is based on boxing, I couldn’t help but get a good feeling when I saw the menu with burger names such as Featherweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight. Could this be a match made in heaven?
I ended up ordering the “Knock Out” burger which came with double wagyu beef patty, double American cheese, crispy bacon, egg, onion rings, lettuce, tomato, pineapple, beetroot relish and garlic aioli. Of course, before putting the gloves on and stepping into the ring, I made sure that it was another “hold the beetroot” moment.
This was a big burger, and quite tall given the onion rings were included. It was a dense, heavy burger that was hard to sqash down and after the first few bites, I ended up pulling out the onion rings to make life a little bit easier and enable me to get my mouth around it better. The flavours were great and worked well together – bacon, egg and cheese were all winners. The meat had a peppery spice to it, which was well balanced out by the sweet pineapple. The black bun was not what I expected and cannot say it’s my favourite type of bun either. Luckily the ingredients in between were delightful!
Thick cut, twisted chips on the side were really tasty and given the warm weather, a bottle of water was in order to wash it all down.
Overall, this was a really good experience and the “knock out” burger almost lived up to it’s name.
