Today’s journey took me back to an old favourite – Captain America’s Hamburger Heaven in Ferntree Gully. An institution in the area, and home to a very Americanised menu and establishment. It is casual and kid friendly, to say the least!
Despite the extensive menu of burgers, ribs and buffalo wings, I took to the usual favourite – the Heavenly Burger (ie burger with the lot). Whilst nothing special, it is a no-nonsense burger that is sure to satisfy your burger craving!
Whilst very tasty, the burger could definitely benefit from a softer bun – brioche would be my choice! And I’m not sure who is making this burger, but the order of ingredients needs improvement. Lettuce and tomato on the bottom, with egg and pineapple on the top, and whilst the combination of flavours still work well together, it makes for a slippery, sticky, and messy experience.
There is an attraction on the menu in the form of their “Heavenly Burger Challenge” – it’s a 1kg burger (2 x the lot) plus 600g of chips. Each contender gets an hour to finish this mammoth challenge, earning recognition with your name on the honour board. I have completed this mighty challenge twice previously, and most recently finishing with a personal best, 29 minutes! This is a must for anyone with an ego about how much food they can eat in one sitting, however this huge amount of food can also prove to be too much for the even the biggest of eaters!!
All the burgers are served with chips, but these are “average” at best! Tasteless, dry sticks of potato that would leave the average punter leaving underwhelmed.
Low rating, and perhaps it’s the locality, but something keeps bringing me back to this iconic place in Ferntree Gully. Worth finding out for yourself!
